Ian Wason Sport Journalist ian1wason60@gmail.com With the exception of batsman Cephas Cooper’s 154, and teammate Navin Bidaisee 90, on the opening day of the 2025 season, it was the bowlers who dominated the spotlight in all four matches, led by the Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC) spin trio, who proved too much for the Merryboys batsmen when Yannic Cariah, Bryan Charles, and Mikkell Govia led the Parkites to an innings and 113-run win in Bagatelle, Diego Martin, yesterday, day two of the T&T Cricket Board National League competition for Premiership Division I teams. There were also nine batsmen who recorded half-centuries across the four matches, however, it was the one-dided contest at Tragerete Road that help the most interest when the visitors made 312 runs all out in their first innings, behind the effort of Red Force batsmen Tion Webster (74) and Jyde Goolie, who added 55, it was over to the ‘spin triplets,’ who spun a web around the Merryboys. Charles led the way in the first innings with five wickets for 26 runs and was supported by out-of-favor West Indies legspinner Cariah with four for 27 as Merryboys were bowled out for 92 in 31.2 overs. Things did not get much better in the second innings, as Merryboys were again bowled out cheaply. They reached 107 in 41.1 overs to lose at home. Govia led the way in the second innings with four wickets for just six runs, while Cariah got three for 33. Cariah had match figures of seven wickets for 60 runs, while Charles had match figures of six for 53, and Govia finished with five for 19, as the three spinners shared 18 of the 20 Merryboys wickets in the match. Elsewhere, at Preysal, the home team fought back against Powegen to force a stalemate. Responding to Powergen’s 353 for six declared, Preysal scored 220 for nine at stumps. Justyn Gangoo finished with an unbeaten 56, while Sachin Seecharan contributed 55 for a share of the spoils in the rain-affected match.
