Defence Minister will not attend Guerra’s funeral today

2026-03-19 - 02:14

Senior Reporter Defence Minister and Toco/Sangre Grande Member of Parliament Wayne Sturge has confirmed that he will not attend the funeral of Sangre Grande businessman Danny Guerra today. Guerra, owner of DG Homes, was killed last Friday by two men after leaving his Sangre Grande office and entering his vehicle. He was shot through the vehicle’s glass window, after which the assailants opened the vehicle door and shot him in the head. Guerra had previously been detained during last November’s state of emergency under a preventative order. Authorities alleged he led an “organised crime gang” involved in planned assassination attempts on a Government Minister and other gang-related activities. Following threats of High Court action, the order was revoked, and Guerra was released on January 2, 2026. The funeral is scheduled for 2 pm today at St Francis RC Church in Sangre Grande. Speaking with Guardian Media, Sturge said, “I’m unable to attend the funeral as the weekly Cabinet meeting will take place at the same time.” At a PNM public meeting on Monday, party member Boodhu described the United National Congress (UNC) as “dangerous” and said, “The evidence suggests that to be a friend to the UNC is to be in serious trouble.” He cited past incidents, noting: “It was trouble for the late UNC Mayaro corporation chairman Hansraj Sumairsingh (murdered in 1999), trouble for Assistant Police Commissioner Norton Regis, allegedly assaulted by UNC’s Dhanraj Singh, trouble for DJ announcer ‘Lurbs’, trouble for Danny Guerra, who was known to have supported the campaign for the same Wayne Sturge, confirmed by photographs circulating in the media. The same Danny Guerra, according to the same Sturge, supported his campaign.”
