Senior Multimedia Reporter radhica.sookraj@guardian.co.tt Former Minister of Public Utilities Nizam Baksh is urging world leaders to pursue peace, as Muslims in Trinidad and Tobago celebrate Eid following the holy month of Ramadan. Speaking to reporters at the Barrackpore Islamic Centre during his Eid message yesterday, Baksh said the occasion represents a time for unity, reflection and strengthening relationships within communities, describing it as a “binding ingredient” that brings humanity together. But he warned that ongoing international conflicts, including tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran, continue to cause immense human suffering. Baksh said the destruction of innocent lives is deeply troubling and called on leaders to focus on building peace rather than fueling division. He stressed that regardless of nationality or religion, people must remember their shared humanity. While Trinidad and Tobago remains relatively peaceful, Baksh expressed concern about the potential ripple effects of global instability, noting the country’s proximity to regions experiencing tension. He urged vigilance, adding that small nations are not immune to the impacts of widening conflicts. Meanwhile, Islamic scholar Mufti Jameel Ali used the occasion to remind believers of the importance of using time wisely, warning that wasting time distances individuals from spiritual growth. He encouraged Muslims to maintain the discipline and devotion developed during Ramadan, while also praying for those suffering in conflict zones around the world.
