The Shiva Gana Organisation welcomed the Hindu New Year with a street procession along Mon Plaisir Road in Cunupia on March 19. The procession moved from the home of Pundit Narindra Maharaj to the Pundit Simboodath Misir Ashram Campoo Shiva Mandir. A nine-foot Durga murti was carried along the route, accompanied by the sounds of dhols, tassa and a marching band. Participants also included Ramleela characters and depictions of Devi Durga, as this year’s Navratri celebrations coincided with the Muslim observance of Eid. Hindus around the world celebrate the New Year, known as Nav Varsha, with great joy, as it symbolises new beginnings and offers an opportunity for reflection, gratitude and aspirations for the year ahead.
