Vendors given deadline to clear old health centre site

Shastri Boodan Vendors operating at the former Chaguanas Health Centre site along Chaguanas Main Road have until March 31 to remove their structures, with demolition set to begin immediately after, Mayor Faaiq Mohammed said. He said the move forms part of a wider plan to establish a structured transport hub aimed at improving traffic flow, public safety, commuter comfort and economic activity in the Borough. “Chaguanas is growing, and with growth comes responsibility,” Mohammed said. “We cannot continue to operate in a way that creates congestion, disorder and long-term risk. We must plan properly, build properly and manage our space properly.” Mohammed said vendors were formally notified and the process would be orderly. Those affected have been offered booths at the Chaguanas Market with six months’ rent free. “No one can reasonably say that this Corporation acted without compassion,” he said, rejecting claims the move targets small traders. “Our duty is to the entire Borough of Chaguanas — to commuters, business owners, residents, vendors and the next generation who will inherit the town we shape today.”
