WASA begins urgent repairs at Nelson Street apartments

2026-03-26 - 16:13

The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) is set to begin urgent wastewater works today at the Nelson Street Housing Apartment Complex following reports of overflowing sewage. In a statement issued Thursday, WASA said it responded to concerns raised by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and has mobilised its Wastewater Collection Section to address the issue. Works are scheduled to commence at 11:00 a.m., a decision the Authority said was made to avoid disruption to students sitting the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) examination and related school activities nearby. WASA explained that the wastewater system at the complex is outdated and susceptible to frequent blockages. These issues are often worsened by the improper disposal of debris into the system. While responsibility for maintenance of the apartment complex and its wastewater infrastructure falls under the HDC, WASA noted it has consistently assisted in addressing such problems and will continue to do so in the interest of public health. The Authority said specialised equipment, including vac master trucks and technical crews, will be deployed to provide immediate relief to affected residents. WASA also reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with key stakeholders to ensure the safety and wellbeing of communities. Residents are being asked to exercise patience as the works are carried out to resolve the problem in the shortest possible time.
