Youth Baptists celebrate ahead of holiday

Young voices rose in unison as members of the Spiritual Shouter Baptist community gathered for an evening of worship, reflection and celebration during Youth Night on Friday. The event, held at the Spiritual Shouter Baptist (SSB) headquarters in Balmain, Couva, formed part of the wider Spiritual Baptist Liberation Week observances. Guided by elders of the faith, young participants took centre stage in a deeply spiritual showcase that blended tradition with youthful energy. Through song, prayer and expressive worship, they demonstrated not only their devotion but also their growing role in preserving and carrying forward the faith’s rich heritage. The evening unfolded with vibrant drumming, spirited singing and powerful moments of praise, creating an atmosphere charged with emotion and unity. The rhythmic beating of drums—long associated with Spiritual Baptist worship—echoed throughout the venue, drawing participants into a shared experience of faith that transcended generations. Elders looked on with pride as the younger members embraced the traditions, many of which were once suppressed under colonial rule. Their participation reflected a renewed interest among youth in understanding and sustaining the practices of the Spiritual Shouter Baptist religion. The 2026 Spiritual Baptist Liberation Week celebrations, which began on March 21 and culminate on March 30, commemorate the anniversary of the repeal of the Prohibition Ordinance—legislation that once outlawed the faith. Now in its 75th anniversary year of observance, the occasion stands as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the Spiritual Baptist community and its enduring contribution to T&T’s cultural and spiritual landscape. —Shastri Boodan
